Linking: consonant sound + vowel sound

Thursday, December 27, 2018 by Eva Easton 45 Comments

Linking is a basic element of American English Pronunciation.
In a dictionary, words are given in isolation.
In natural speech, however, you don’t say words separately.
You connect words together. You link them.

In this lesson, we practice linking pattern #1:
consonant sound + vowel sound

And now it’s your turn.
Here’s your audio pronunciation quiz.
Listen to each audio.
Which sentence do you hear?

      Thank you, Ali.

Understanding linking is essential to understanding native speakers.

I’ve taught linking to my students for many years. I’ve finally put it online and now everyone knows this “secret” to the music of English.

Linking is really important. Once we train our ears to hear linking, we understand English better.

    Take care.
