The Bear and the Travelers

a fable by Aesop

there ... were ... travelers ... road ... together .... bear
appeared ... near ... before ... ran ... tree ... branches
other ... threw ... ground ... pretended ... around
perfectly ... breath ... corpse ... clear .. whispered ... ear
replied ... never ... travel ... friend ... deserts ... danger

One day there were two travelers walking down the road together, when, suddenly, a bear appeared near the road. Before the bear could see them, one traveler ran to a tree and climbed up into the branches and hid there. The other traveler wasn't as quick and couldn't escape, so he threw himself on the ground and pretended to be dead.

The bear came up and sniffed all around him, but the traveler kept perfectly still and held his breath. They say that a bear won't touch a dead body. The bear thought the traveler was a corpse, and went away.

When the bear had gone and the coast was clear, the traveler in the tree came down, and asked the other traveler what the bear had whispered to him in his ear.

The other traveler replied, "He told me never again to travel with a friend who deserts you at the first sign of danger."
